I teach the Introduction to Management course and Workplace Partners at The College at Southeastern in Wake Forest, North Carolina. And as I do with every course I teach, I start the semester by asking the question, “Why?” Why should we care about learning a particular topic? As it relates to the management course, why should we care about management principles and practices?
But this question is not just limited to an Introduction to Management course. It is a question that any ministry leader should consider. So here are some quick considerations for the question, “Why should we care about management principles and practices?”
1. Because everything belongs to God
The first sentence of the Bible answers the question, “Whose universe is this?” And throughout the Bible, God’s ownership is consistently reinforced. It is clear. Every single quark is His. So as we look around at the organizations and people that we lead, it is essential to first recognize that none of it is ours. This leads us to the second reason why we should care about management principles and practices:
2. Because God has entrusted everyone with something
The Parable of the Talents tells us that God has entrusted us with His stuff and wants us to use it to advance His Kingdom. Everyone has been given something. For ministry leaders, this can include monetary, physical, educational, and human resources. And we should feel the weight of this responsibility as we lead our respective ministries. This leads us to the third reason why we should care about management principles and practices:
3. Because everyone is a momentary steward
God has given each one of us a brief period to steward His resources. During a lifetime, we are expected to steward everything He has given us, whether much or little, to the best of our ability. And understanding management principles and practices will help us do this, especially at the organizational level.
The study of management helps ministry leaders become better planners, organizers, and controllers. In short, it helps us become better stewards. This leads us to our final reason why we should care about management principles and practices:
4. Because everyone will be held accountable for their stewardship
Understanding management can help us be great stewards. The Bible tells us that, one day, everyone will be held accountable for his or her stewardship. God is expecting a good return on the resources that He has entrusted to us. Therefore, we should pursue all avenues that aid in our pursuit of great stewardship, including a solid understanding of management. And this is why we should care about management principles and practices.
